SOPHORA AFFINIS

Dreams that never flowered
Gustav to Alma Mahler

I dream
We are close--closer than the indrawn breath

She weeps like the willow
Wan blossoms falling
Falling
Spilling clusters

A fall from innocence
For der Erde to split open
and swallow her up
Bride of melancholy

She tempts me with her forbidden fruit
Leathery tear drops
I pluck one from her limbs
Press it to my mouth and
Let slip between my lips the
String of black pearls
Dusky, dark rosary

Incanting

Sweet Morpheus!

Swallow

And everything around me comes so
Soft, here's the rain
